We found this 1994 Mercedes-Benz E500 on eBay in June 2023, listed at $49,999 with about 52,000 miles. It is the V8 version of the W124 E-Class, the car first sold as the 500E. The listing has ended, but we keep the record. Asking prices for these cars vary widely, and a real one helps put the next one in context.

What this car was
A Brilliant Silver Metallic sedan with black leather, burl wood trim and color-matched lower cladding, with no sunroof. The photos show a straight, clean car with the flared fenders that set the E500 apart from the six-cylinder E-Class sedans.

Power came from the 5.0-liter M119 twin-cam V8 through a four-speed automatic. The seller listed the following:
- Engine wiring harness replaced in 2019
- Fresh oil change before the sale
- 17-inch wheels in the style of the 190E Evolution II
- Aftermarket exhaust
- Self-leveling rear suspension and Automatic Slip Control (ASR)
- Heated power front seats with memory, power steering column, automatic climate control and cruise control
- Pioneer CD stereo
- Headlight wipers and washers, fog lights and a power antenna

Was $49,999 a fair ask?
It was a confident price, aimed at collectors. The E500 is one of the most wanted W124 sedans, the replaced wiring harness takes care of a known weak point in Mercedes models from this era, and 52,000 miles is low. Two changes cut the other way: the non-original wheels and the aftermarket exhaust. Buyers paying top money usually want factory parts, so a seller is wise to include the originals if they still have them.
A little E500 history
Mercedes developed the 500E with Porsche, which also handled part of the assembly at its Zuffenhausen works. It went on sale in 1991. For 1994, Mercedes renamed its mid-size range the E-Class, and the 500E became the E500. Production ended in 1995, which makes this one of the later cars.
