Buying one: The 323 was Mazda's compact for the US market, and the GT and all-wheel-drive GTX versions of the late-'80s car used a turbocharged 1.6-litre engine. Ordinary 323s are simple and cheap to keep running. With the turbo models, check for oil smoke and leaks around the turbo, and expect trim and body parts to be harder to find than mechanical ones. Rust in the rear arches and sills is the usual killer.
