We came across this 1979 Alfa Romeo Spider in July 2023, listed by its owner in Kennesaw, Georgia, northwest of Atlanta, for $2,900 with 85,000 miles. The ad has expired. We keep the record because it was one of the cheapest running Spiders we have seen, and that is useful context for anyone pricing one.

What this car was
A brown metallic Spider with a tan interior, a black soft top and alloy wheels. The photos show the US-market rubber bumpers and the cut-off Kamm tail of the second-series car. The paint has faded on the hood and front, which matches the seller’s description of a mostly original, unrestored car.

The seller described it as running well and “super fun to drive”, with a five-speed manual. Here is what the ad disclosed:
- Mostly original and unrestored
- Newer soft top and a new battery
- Receipts for maintenance and repairs from the last ten years
- 85,000 miles

Was $2,900 a fair ask?
On paper it was very cheap for a running Spider with receipts. The likely reason is condition: the paint is tired, and an unrestored Alfa of this age almost always needs rust repair somewhere, often in the sills, floors and trunk. A buyer would have wanted to check those areas and the condition of the fuel injection before getting excited. Even so, as a starting point for a driver-quality Spider, the ask left plenty of room for repairs.

A little Spider history
Alfa Romeo introduced the Spider in 1966 with a Pininfarina body and a rounded boat tail; that original car became famous after Dustin Hoffman drove one in The Graduate. For 1970 the tail was cut off square, the Kamm-tail look this 1979 car has. The Spider stayed in production until 1993. US cars of this era used a 2.0-liter twin-cam four with mechanical fuel injection.
