We spotted this 1999 Lexus LS 400 in July 2023 at a dealer in Staten Island, New York, asking $17,999 with 40,000 miles. Low-mileage LS 400s are what everyone hopes to find and few do, so we keep the record of this one for price reference.

What this car was
A black base-model sedan with the silver-gray lower body trim of this era and a black leather interior. The photos were taken indoors and show deep, clean paint, straight bumpers and the factory alloy wheels.

Inside, the leather looks barely creased and the wood-rimmed steering wheel is unmarked. The dealer described the car as well preserved, with:
- The 4.0-liter DOHC V8 and an automatic transmission
- Black paint over black leather
- Fog lamps and 16-inch alloy wheels
The engine bay photo shows the V8 under its plastic cover with no visible leaks or grime, which fits the low mileage. The dealer did not mention service records or the number of owners in the text we kept.

Was $17,999 a fair ask?
That was a strong price for a 1999 LS 400, but this is the kind of car that earns one. Mileage is what drives value on these, and 40,000 is very low for the age. Black over black is a popular combination too. A buyer would want service records to back up the mileage before paying near the ask.
A little LS 400 history
The LS 400 launched the Lexus brand for the 1990 model year. This second-generation car arrived for 1995, and the 1998 update gave the V8 variable valve timing and a five-speed automatic. Contrary to the old write-up, 1999 was not the final year: the LS 400 ran through 2000 before the LS 430 replaced it. The LS 400 built its name on quietness and smoothness; an early Lexus ad famously balanced a pyramid of champagne glasses on the hood of a running car.
