We spotted this 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe on Craigslist in July 2023, offered by a dealer in Medina, Ohio for $9,995 with 61,000 miles showing. The ad has expired. We keep the record here because a first-generation Mustang coupe under $10,000 is unusual, and real asking prices are the best way to judge what one is worth.
What this car was
A two-door hardtop in a light gold-green shade, with chrome bumpers, the 1966 grille and full wheel covers. The listing described it as an eight-cylinder car with an automatic transmission. The paint looks dull but fairly even in the photos.

Inside was a light parchment interior with woven seat inserts. The listing was honest about the cabin:
- The front seats needed reupholstering
- One door handle had a small crack
- The rear seat and headliner were in good, clean condition

Was $9,995 a fair ask?
For a V8 1966 coupe it was a low price, which tells you something. The car looked complete and fairly honest, but it needed interior work, the paint was tired, and the listing gave few details about the engine or the body underneath. A buyer would have wanted a close look at the floors and lower panels, where these cars rust. If those were solid, it was an affordable way into a first-generation Mustang.
A little Mustang history
Ford introduced the Mustang in April 1964 and sold it as a 1965 model, creating the pony car class. The 1966 model got a new grille, new side trim and a five-dial instrument cluster in place of the earlier Falcon-style gauges. It was a huge seller, with more than 600,000 built for the year. The first generation continued through 1968 before a bigger restyle.
