We spotted this 1986 Renault Alliance in October 2022, listed on Kijiji in Toronto. It’s a red, single-owner car that had been parked for a while. The asking price in our notes didn’t survive, but the Alliance is rare enough now that any surviving example is worth recording for people trying to price one.

What this car was

A red Alliance, photographed nose-on and parked on grass under a tree. The paint had been redone at some point and still had a gloss in the photo, and the quad headlights and black grille looked complete. The front plate area was empty.

The seller’s description was short and honest:

  • One owner
  • Had not been driven in a while
  • Runs once fuel is added, according to the seller
  • Repainted at some point
  • Offered as a car to fix up, with the price open to offers

That makes it a project car rather than a driver. Anyone buying a car like this should plan on fresh fluids, fuel system work, brakes and tires before it goes back on the road. The upside of a single-owner car is that the history is usually simple, and the seller can tell you how it was used and why it was parked.

What to check on an Alliance

Rust is the main enemy, so look at the floors, the rocker panels and the bottoms of the doors. Parts for the mechanical side were shared with other Renaults of the period, but trim and body pieces are now hard to find, so a complete car is worth more than a cheap one with missing parts.

A little Alliance history

The Alliance was the American-built version of the Renault 9. American Motors built it in Kenosha, Wisconsin, from the 1983 model year, as part of AMC’s partnership with Renault. It was named Motor Trend’s Car of the Year for 1983 and sold well at first, with sedans, a convertible and the related Encore hatchback. Sales faded quickly, and production ended after the 1987 model year, the same year Chrysler bought American Motors.

Today the Alliance is a rare sight, so a running, complete one gets attention at shows and meets.
