We spotted this 1995 Saturn SW2 on Cars.com in October 2022, listed by a dealer for $6,477. The ad has since expired, but we keep the record. Saturn wagons were common once and are now rarely seen in decent shape, so a real asking price is useful for anyone trying to price one.

What this car was

A dark green SW2 wagon with a gray interior. In the one photo we kept, the paint still has a good shine, the plastic body panels line up well, and the factory alloy wheels look clean. The headlights have yellowed a little, which is common on these.

The SW2 was the better-equipped wagon in the range, with the 1.9-liter twin-cam four. The cheaper SW1 used a single-cam version of the same engine. The listing didn’t give a mileage that we recorded, and it didn’t list any faults.

Anyone looking at an S-Series today would check two things first. The twin-cam engine is known for burning oil as it ages, so the oil level and service history matter. And while the plastic panels don’t rust, the steel structure underneath, including the floors and rear wheel arches, still can.

Was $6,477 a fair ask?

It was on the high side for a 1990s Saturn, and dealer pricing was part of that. In its favour, it looked unusually clean for its age, and the dent-resistant plastic panels mean many of these survive without the door dings and rust that finish off other small cars. Without a recorded mileage or service history, though, a buyer would have a hard time justifying top money for one.

A little Saturn S-Series history

GM launched Saturn as a separate brand, and the S-Series went on sale in late 1990 as a 1991 model. It used a steel space frame with dent-resistant polymer panels on the doors and fenders, and Saturn dealers were known for no-haggle pricing. The SW wagons joined the sedan and coupe for 1993. The S-Series ran through 2002, and GM shut down the Saturn brand in 2010.
