We spotted this 1977 Fiat 128 sedan on Craigslist in July 2023, listed by its owner in Wilmington, Delaware, for $12,995 with 23,000 miles showing. The ad has expired, but we keep the record. Fiat 128s rarely come up for sale in the US, so a real asking price is useful to anyone trying to value one.

What this car was

A red four-door sedan, photographed in a home garage. The body looks straight and complete, with the big US-spec bumpers of the period. The paint showed some weathering, which the seller acknowledged.

Inside, the tan vinyl seats and door panels look in very good shape for their age. The dash and two-spoke wheel are intact, and the floor shifter confirms the manual gearbox.

The engine bay looks original and unrestored, but complete. The seller was clear about the to-do list and what came with the car:

  • It needed a new fuel pump
  • The paint showed signs of weathering
  • A box of spare parts and accessories was included, from filters and gaskets to a workshop manual

Was $12,995 a fair ask?

It was a strong ask. The 128 was a cheap, practical car when new, and most US examples rusted away or were scrapped long ago. Low miles, a tidy interior and a stash of spares helped this one. Against that, it needed a fuel pump before it could be driven, the paint was tired, and sedans draw less interest than the 128 coupes. A buyer who wanted this particular car would have had to pay up for it. Someone who only wanted a 128 could have waited for a cheaper one.

A little Fiat 128 history

The 128 went on sale in 1969 and was named European Car of the Year for 1970. Its layout, a transverse engine with the gearbox mounted on the end and driving the front wheels, became the template that most small cars still follow. It was sold as a two- and four-door sedan, a wagon, and later as sporty coupes.
