We spotted this 2001 Nissan Altima GXE on Craigslist in August 2023. The seller in Rehoboth, Massachusetts wanted $7,900 for it and said it had covered just 27,000 miles with one elderly owner. The ad is gone now. We keep the record so that anyone pricing a low-mileage Altima from this era has a real number to work with.

What this car was

A maroon sedan in the mid-level GXE trim. The seller said it was a southern car with a rust-free body, and that the paint had faded a little from the sun. In the photos the paint looks even and the chrome grille and trim are intact.

Inside was tan cloth upholstery with a matching tan dash and door panels. The driver seat bolster and carpets look barely used in the photos, which fits the mileage.

Power came from the 2.4-liter four-cylinder, the only engine Nissan offered in the Altima that year. According to the seller, the car had:

  • One elderly owner from new
  • A clean CarFax report
  • New tires and brakes
  • A fresh oil change

Was $7,900 a fair ask?

It was a high price for a 2001 Altima, but this was not a typical one. Twenty-seven thousand miles, one owner, a clean history report and fresh tires and brakes are exactly what a buyer looking for a cheap, reliable car wants. The faded paint and the basic four-cylinder spec kept it from being a collector item. We think the ask was reasonable for someone who wanted the lowest-mileage example they could find.

A little Altima history

The Altima arrived in 1993 as Nissan’s compact sedan. The second generation, sold from 1998 to 2001, was built in Smyrna, Tennessee and used the 2.4-liter four-cylinder only. This car came from its final year. For 2002 Nissan replaced it with a much larger Altima that also offered a V6.
