We spotted this 1987 Mercury Topaz on Facebook Marketplace in October 2022, priced at $7,000. It was not a normal Topaz. The seller had turned it into a six-door stretch with a raised roof. The ad is gone, but we keep the record because there is no other way to put a price on a one-off like this.

What this car was

A white Topaz that had been cut and lengthened into a six-door, limousine-style car. Our original post was run through an article spinner, so some of the details are garbled, but the main points of the ad come through clearly. According to the seller:

  • Six doors, with a sunroof and a raised roof over the passenger section
  • Two rows of rear seats facing each other
  • The middle windows were Lexan, painted over
  • New belts and hoses
  • Power windows and power locks
  • An “ooga” horn
  • Everything worked, and the seller called it the only one of its kind

The stretch was home-built rather than the work of a coachbuilder, so the quality of the welding and the strength of the joints were the big unknowns. Since the original photos are no longer available, we can’t comment on how well it was done.

Was $7,000 a fair ask?

There is no market for six-door Topaz limousines, so the price came down to what one buyer would pay for a novelty. A regular Topaz from this era is a cheap car, and almost all of the $7,000 was for the conversion. A buyer would be paying for the fun factor, and would need to check the body structure carefully before driving it on the highway. For a parade car or a promotional vehicle, the ask could make sense. As transportation, it did not.

A little Topaz history

Mercury sold the Topaz from the 1984 to 1994 model years as its version of the Ford Tempo, replacing the Zephyr. It was a front-wheel-drive compact sold as a two-door and four-door sedan, with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder as the main engine. For 1987, the year of this car, Ford added a part-time all-wheel-drive option to the Tempo and Topaz, an unusual feature for an American compact at the time.
