We spotted this 1983 Audi Coupe GT in November 2022, listed by its owner on Craigslist in the Bozeman, Montana area. We did not record the asking price, and the ad has expired. We keep the record because Coupe GTs rarely turn up for sale, and this one came with a clear account of its problems.
What this car was
A silver two-door coupe sitting outside among autumn leaves, with a coat of dust, a scrape on the driver-side front fender and alloy wheels. It is the front-wheel-drive Coupe GT with Audi’s five-cylinder engine and a manual gearbox, not a quattro or a turbo.

The interior has dark grey sport seats that look intact, but the cabin is dirty, with debris on the floor. The seller was direct about why it was for sale:
- A fire started in the engine bay while the car was being driven, caused by faulty fuel injector clips
- It needed work before it could be driven again
- The seller did not have time to fix it
- Two-door, five-cylinder, front-wheel drive, manual
That makes it a project. The extent of the fire damage was not described, so wiring, hoses and anything plastic in the engine bay would need a close look before anyone could judge what the car was worth.
A little Audi Coupe history
Audi launched the Coupe in 1980 as a two-door fastback based on the 80 sedan. The same body was the starting point for the original Audi Quattro, the turbocharged all-wheel-drive car that changed rallying in the early 1980s. In North America the front-wheel-drive version was sold as the Coupe GT, and its five-cylinder engine and sharp handling earned it a loyal following. Our earlier write-up of this car mixed it up with the turbocharged quattro and claimed a production run of 2,500 cars; neither applies to this one.
