We came across this 1972 Opel GT on eBay in July 2023, priced at $10,000 with 34,000 miles showing. It was sold as a running project. The listing is gone, but we keep the record here so anyone pricing an Opel GT has a real example to compare against.

What this car was
A yellow GT with a black interior, photographed outside a row of storage units. From a distance it looks sharp. The seller was honest that the yellow paint was a budget respray, with overspray and flaws you could see up close.

Under the long hood sat the 1.9-liter four, paired with a manual gearbox. The car had been parked for a few years. It started, ran and drove, but ran a little rough. The seller listed what needed doing:
- Some rust around the rockers and floors
- Worn seats, with the driver seat torn through to the foam
- The wood dash trim and headliner needed attention
- Brakes worked but needed a refresh
- Wheels and tires were old but usable
- Clean title

Was $10,000 a fair ask?
It was a fair ask for a running, titled GT. A complete, running car is a better starting point than the many rusted shells out there. The catch is that the work list is long: rust in the rockers and floors, an interior to redo, brakes and a tune-up. The respray is cosmetic only and does not add value. A buyer would need to budget for all of that on top of the price, and a sorted GT can cost less than a project plus a restoration.

A little Opel GT history
Opel built the GT from 1968 to 1973, and Buick dealers sold it in the United States. The bodies were made in France by Brissonneau & Lotz, and the hidden headlights rotate sideways using a lever on the console instead of a motor. Most US cars, like this one, got the 1.9-liter four.
