We spotted this 1989 Isuzu I-Mark XS on Cars.com in October 2022, offered by a classic-car dealer for $4,999. The ad has expired, but we keep the record. I-Marks almost never come up for sale anymore, so a real asking price is worth hanging on to.
What this car was
A silver I-Mark with a grey interior and a gasoline engine. The one photo we have shows it head-on: straight bumpers, clear lenses, an intact grille and paint with a decent shine. There are no obvious dents, rust or mismatched panels in the shot, though one photo can only tell you so much. The car was photographed on a grass field wearing the dealer’s New Jersey plate.
Our original post went through an article spinner and lost nearly everything from the ad except the color, the fuel type and the price. It also picked up text from other cars, including a second price that belonged to a Mercury Cougar. The $4,999 figure is the one stated for this car.
Was $4,999 a fair ask?
For a clean survivor of a car that has mostly disappeared, $4,999 was a reasonable ask. Most I-Marks were cheap commuter cars that were used up and scrapped, so finding one in this shape is the hard part. On the other hand, there is little collector demand for them, so the price depends on finding the one buyer who wants this specific car. Mileage and service history would have helped, but we didn’t record them.
A little I-Mark history
Isuzu sold the I-Mark in the US from 1981 to 1989. The first generation was a rear-wheel-drive car based on the Isuzu Gemini. For 1985 it was replaced by a front-wheel-drive model, which Chevrolet also sold as the Spectrum. This 1989 car is from the final year of the I-Mark name. Isuzu later left the US passenger-car market altogether and stuck to trucks and SUVs.
