We spotted this 1994 Mercury Sable GS on Cars.com in October 2022, on a used-car dealer’s lot with an asking price of $2,988. The ad is long gone, but we keep the record. Cheap, clean ’90s sedans like this are getting harder to find, and a real asking price is a useful marker for anyone pricing one.
What this car was
A four-door Sable GS sedan in a light teal, the seafoam shade that was everywhere in the early ’90s. The photos show a straight body, a matching side rub strip and the original Mercury wheel covers on newer touring tires. The headlight lenses show some haze, but the grille and bumpers are intact. It had an automatic transmission, and our original notes record 65,020 miles.

One thing to note: the dealer’s windshield in the photo reads 3988, while the listing price recorded in our post was $2,988. Online and on-lot prices often differ, so the actual figure may have been either one.

Was $2,988 a fair ask?
At $2,988, this was priced as cheap transportation, which is what it was. The modest mileage and clean look helped it. What held it back is that Sables from this era are not collected, and the automatic transmissions in these cars have a mixed reputation, so a buyer would want to see how it shifted and whether there were service records.
A little Sable history
Mercury introduced the Sable for 1986 as its version of the Ford Taurus, and the pair helped make aerodynamic styling mainstream in American family cars. It came as a sedan and a wagon. This 1994 car belongs to the second generation, sold from 1992 to 1995. The Sable stayed in production until 2005 and returned briefly for 2008 and 2009.
